Chapter Two

It didn't take long for Rina and Rae to return to the keep. Huidong Spire was only about a mile away from where they had located the body, and being Faeyries, the two covered ground at an exceptional rate. Soon, their eyes looked upon the familiar bridge that led to the fortress entrance. Exiting the forest, the twins stepped into the clearing facing the wide stone bridge that spanned the width of the flowing river, Elmrane, below.

Constructed by Faeyran artisans, the stone bridge was a beautifully wrought structure extending nearly fifty feet in width and 200 in length while the winding Elmrane traveled lazily beneath them. The river was a part of a greater water source, flowing downstream from the Bay of Salsor. About a mile north of the fortress, a large dam helped to keep the valley from flooding by blocking off the river. Without it, the bridge and most of the surrounding land would submerge under the onrushing water, and access to the spire would be cut off.

The bridge connected to a slightly taller precipice on the opposite side of the chasm, upon which the mighty Huidong Spire sat gleaming in the light of the twin suns. Huidong Spire held a long and storied history, and it had forged many a legend behind those walls. The green and white tower rose proudly at the center of the rocky overhang where two small spires stood adjacent. They had constructed wide windows around the walls in perfect symmetry, along with covered holes for archers.

A steel portcullis stood before two thick wooden doors that could withstand anything from hammers and axes to battering rams. Along either side of the entrance were long-ranged artillery weapons designed to make passage difficult for any intruders who attempted to cross the bridge. The stone structure was the only way in, as any other means would prove fruitless.

Large, imposing statues of Faeyran heroes within the Emerald Guard decorated the capstones of the bridge and stood as memories of their glories from the past. These monuments had withstood the test of time, judging by the vines and plants growing inside the cracks. Rina had no doubt they would outlast even her lifespan.

Captain Arakas took great pride in maintaining the fortress, and its upkeep was a top priority for him. The twins had spent many a day assigned to cleaning the mighty spire and the bridge, much to their chagrin. Still, between the tedious upkeep and the impressive craftsmanship of their masons, Huidong Spire remained one of the top fortresses in the land, despite their reputation for outcasts.

When Rina and Rae approached the bridge, they passed by four soldiers who stood on duty. Kalar, Gaeleath, Kailu, and Wyrra were all part of the frontline faction of the Guard, foot soldiers skilled in close quarter combat. The four had been enlisted for as long as the twins, however, time had fostered little in terms of friendship. The quartet of friends held an air of indifference toward Rina and Rae, which was slightly better than the outright disdain held by others in the Guard.
